This bookmark is crafted from solid, recycled native NZ Rimu timber, and intricately adorned with engraved Māori designs - inspired by the traditional practise of tāmoko.
Designed by Wiremu Barriball and proudly made in Aotearoa by Revolution Aotearoa.
Available in 3 designs:
Taniko Kōwhaiwhai
Taniko is a traditional Māori weaving technique, notable for its intricate geometric patterns. Used primarily for decorative borders on garments like cloaks (kākahu),
Taniko holds significant cultural importance within Maori culture.
Wheku
Beautiful Wheku with pāua shell eyes. Held in high regard as a guardian, the Wheku adorns the peak of traditional ancestral houses, watching over those whose lineage and heritage are deeply connected to that sacred meeting place.
Huia:
The central feature of this bookmark is the Huia tail feathers. Huia were highly valued by Māori and were seen as symbols of leadership, prestige, and mana (spiritual power and authority). Possession and display of a Huia feather was restricted to those of high rank, and it was considered a great honour to be gifted one.
